Financial Review - Balance $2,144.43. Expenses of postage, office supplies (mailing), post office box fees and a new laptop computer were incurred since last meeting in October. Dues and donations totaled $940.00. Non-Profit Status - WRMMA is now registered as a Non-Profit Corporation with the State of Nevada. However, filing with the Internal Revenue Service still needs to occur in order to take advantage of tax exempt status as well as other benefits such as reduced rate postage.
The website is up and running with minimal problems and ample traffic. We have received traffic from the US, Australia, Belgium, Japan, China, Britain, Germany, and Indonesia. Bob connected live to the Internet and showed online analysis reports for the website. Meeting pre-registration has not been as expected. Comments indicated that the link was somewhat hidden. So, I have moved the link out to the bottom of the menu and included a snazzy graphic to get more attention. Meeting pre-registration has not been as good as expected. I have included a link in the WRUMMA and NSA areas to email me those pre-registrations as well. Laptop - A new laptop has been purchased from DELL and is expected to ship on February 4, 2002. It is a 1 GHz Pentium III with 256K RAM, CD ROM, Video, Sound, and Windows XP. Quicken will be installed once it arrives and be used to keep track of the organizations finances.
3 W Action items were reviewed. Mine site Summaries: Cortez - Is running a Cat 24H Motor Grader, and has offered data they collect out to anyone in the group that is interested. Looking at the idea of running natural gas in their haul trucks. Liquid gas and high pressure direct injection. Westport is the company that Cortez is working with. They are partnered with Cummins and the company is Cummins Westport. Just beginning the fifth phase of their Pipeline Pit and is the biggest phase to date. Barrick - Getting a Hitachi EX5500 on a four month trial. They are going to idle out an EX3500 that does not have quite enough reach. Running 13 685s and this time next year will be running only six. Consolidating to 930E haul trucks. They are beginning in pit dumping to lower cost by a goal of ten cents per ton. They have some clean one owner 685s that are for sale that they are willing to deal on. Running CAT 854 RTDs and they are doing well. Also, they are running cast edges that are giving four to five times the life of conventional edges. Bald Mountain - Business as usual until September, but September may see some change. Looking at ways to extend mine life. Echo Bay McCoy - Mill will be down in about a month and half. Will have about 1 1/2 years of reclamation. Some people will be laid off in about a month or so. Will be completely out of the mine in 2005 or there about. Rapping up and looking for other jobs. Apollo Gold Florida Canyon - Going through a bonding phase and have about 1 1/2 to four years left. Looking at converting their Hitachi EX3500 lube system from air to hydraulic and looking for any information about that subject. Newmont - In the process of the acquisition of Normandy and Franco Nevada. International mining is doing quite well. Specifically Peru, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan. Lone Tree - Ramping up production significantly, equipment and personnel. Making a push to mine out Lone Tree in two to four years and then the equipment and personnel will move back to Twin Creeks for a ramp up there. It is designed this way to manage capital spending and cash flow, but also reduce the need to layoff and re-hire personnel. Carlin - Moving some equipment around between Mesquite, Battle Mountain, and Twin Creeks. Concentrating on condition monitoring and looking at implementing vibration analysis on the mobile equipment. Working with a new manpower schedule. They are starting the GQ expansion. Noted also that their rebuild shop is up and running well. They are doing 3512 and 3516 engines as well as the same components as the rebuild shop at Twin Creeks. The net savings of the rebuild programs are significant. Both Twin Creeks and Carlin have ramped up personnel in both rebuild shops and can see immediate value. Twin Creeks - The new rebuild shop is up and runninng and rebuilding differentials, wheel groups, torque converters, some transmissions, and miscellaneous components for shovels and drills. Plans to update the PM program concentrating on the lubrication and associated analysis.
Gave an overview of the Nevada Supplier Association - They have about 13 members as of right now. They have a concern about a connection with the WRMMA and WRUMMA and the lack of Supplier participation. They need the support in order to help support the master mechanics associations. Their members have a concern that they are not getting the value of the current design of the meetings. They want to support us and be an asset. There was discussion immediately after Brandie's comments. It was apparent that there are parties in favor of supplier participation and those that are not. The Group decided to take the day to think about it and get back on the subject at the end of the day before we adjourn. 9:00a.m. to 9:15a.m. Break 9:15a.m. to 11:30a.m. Sharing Best Practices Presentations Jason Hill Newmont Twin Creeks Mine

Pricing is comparable to clay based products. Said to be 25% more absorbent than clay based floor dry material.
Jack handed out some handouts and discussed the manifolds, spacers and bolts. It is a bigger issue with the larger trucks. Tear down, extraction and re-assembly is a big chore. Jack's data shows that the spacers are high temperature spacers and should be replaced at rebuild. He claims that most of the problems with broken bolts at his site are related to expansion and contraction due to heating and cooling in the exhaust manifolds. Jack says that there is an update out there from Caterpillar that over-sizes the upper portion of the manifold holes and uses the same bolts and washers as Caterpillar used to use. Don T. also showed a CaterpillarÓ update that cost about $3,500 per engine to update. This includes a new seal and manifold sleeve. The new sleeve is used to connect some of the sections of the manifold. Two new exhaust manifold sleeves and one new exhaust seal are used to replace one former exhaust manifold sleeve. The new seal and the new sleeve will allow some relative movement between the sections of the exhaust manifold. This will reduce some of the forces on the bolts that fasten the exhaust manifolds to the cylinder head. This will help prevent the bolts from breaking according to the CaterpillarÓ literature.
Don T showed slides of CaterpillarÒ bolts that were removed after use and some slides of InconelÔ bolts that were removed after use. The InconelÔ bolts appeared to be in good shape and the CaterpillarÒ bolts looked extremely stressed and corroded. United Titanium, Inc. supplies the bolts that Newmont is using. However, Note: Newmont has not completed life cycle testing and in no way endorses these bolts. The tensile, yield and hardness measurements are about double that of OEM CaterpillarÒ bolts.
